Udupi Shivalli

If you’re on the hunt for a South Indian vegetarian restaurant in Leicester that feels like a warm culinary hug, Udupi Shivalli at 21 Welford Rd, Leicester LE2 7AD might just be your next favorite food stop. Nestled conveniently near the city center, this place serves up more than just a meal-it delivers an experience that balances authentic flavors, comfort, and value in equal measure.

From the moment you walk in, the aroma of freshly ground spices, simmering sambars, and crisp dosas hits you. Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or just a lover of good Indian food, Udupi Shivalli checks all the boxes. The restaurant is especially popular among students, professionals, and families alike, offering an inviting dine-in space with warm lighting and comfortable seating. It’s casual enough for solo diners and cozy enough for dinner with friends.

The Shivalli Special Thali is often the talk of the table-and for good reason. It’s a symphony of textures and tastes: soft chapatis, vibrant curries, tangy pickles, crispy papads, and soothing desserts all served on a traditional steel platter. It’s also one of the few places in Leicester offering an all-you-can-eat vegetarian buffet, which locals rave about.

Craving something lighter? Their Mysore Masala Dosa-a crisp fermented rice crepe smeared with spicy chutney and stuffed with potato masala-is a fan-favorite. Or go for the Idli Vada Sambar, a classic combo that's incredibly satisfying for breakfast, lunch, or a quick bite between errands.

Unlike many generic curry houses, Udupi Shivalli is laser-focused on vegetarian and vegan cuisine, drawing its roots from Udupi-style cooking-a region in Karnataka known for its pure-veg culinary traditions. This sets them apart not just in Leicester, but across the UK.

Another strong suit? The diverse drink and dessert menu. Don’t leave without trying their Rose Lassi or Masala Chai, especially if you're pairing it with a decadent Gulab Jamun or Badam Halwa. Those with a sweet tooth will appreciate their Jaggery Dosa and fruit-based Sorbet, a refreshing way to finish off a rich meal.

Udupi Shivalli also gets kudos for being health-conscious and inclusive. From vegan dishes to gluten-free options, there’s something here for everyone. And if you're in a hurry, the takeaway and delivery services are top-notch. You can even order through no-contact options-something that’s become a real convenience post-pandemic.

Accessibility-wise, it’s good to know that while there’s wheelchair-accessible seating, parking might be a bit of a challenge since the restaurant doesn't have a designated accessible car park. But public transport links nearby make up for it.

The place also doubles as a great spot to catch up on sports-yes, you read that right. So, if you’re looking to enjoy a cricket match with a plate of Chilli Paneer and a cold Kingfisher beer, you won’t be disappointed.

It's equally popular for lunch and dinner crowds, often buzzing with activity but rarely feeling overcrowded. And if you're the type who likes to try a bit of everything, their Veggie Platter or Chole Bhature combo offer variety without the commitment.

If you're searching for vegetarian Indian food in Leicester, vegan dosa options, authentic South Indian cuisine UK, or best thali restaurant near me, Udupi Shivalli deserves to be on your radar. It’s not just about what’s on the plate-it’s about heritage, consistency, and the kind of food that feels like home, even when you're miles away.

Udupi Shivalli brings the essence of South India right into the heart of Leicester, balancing traditional flavors with modern expectations. Whether you're looking for a hearty thali, a light uttapam, or just a spot to sip chai with friends, this place welcomes you with open arms-and full plates.

While in Leicester for work, we were craving a taste of our hometown’s cuisine. As passionate South Indian food lovers, we decided to visit Udupi Shivalli Restaurant. From the moment we stepped in, the ambience was captivating, with beautiful interior decor that set the perfect mood. The well-placed cash/bar counter on the right and the bike display on the left added a unique touch. The seating arrangement was comfortable, complemented by soothing instrumental music. For our meal, we dined in with two Maddyana Thalis, one Brahmins Thali, Mosaru Vada, and Mysuru coffee, while also ordering five Poori Bhaji and six Masala Dosas for takeaway. The Thali portions were generous, well-presented, and filling. The Mysuru coffee had an authentic Mangalore/Udupi flavor, and the service was exceptional. However, while the experience was enjoyable, there is significant room for improvement in the overall taste of the food.

Love the fact that it is all vegetarian restaurant Which means 100s of options to choose. Their expertise is in South Indian cuisine so better stick to it. We had mysore masala dosa and idly sambhar which was just delicious. We ordered chole bhature. Bhature was really soft however chole was okay. Badam halwa for dessert was just yum . I loved their interior and atmosphere all bright and colourful. Service was quick and spot on. Note that They don’t serve alcohol.
